When designing my own bedroom I went against most of the usual rules and created a bold, creative space rather than a peaceful setting for sleep. My first disclaimer has to be that my room is far larger than most bedrooms and I’m well aware of that, my room is actually the largest in the house and was originally two bedrooms before we knocked through. Second disclaimer, my room is NEVER this clean but I now have photographic evidence that it once was.
I have decided to show my room in two parts, the bedroom half which is in this post and the next will be the dressing room/work area half. The same design runs through my whole room and there are some areas that overlap but I wanted to make sure I had a clear divide and separation for the areas in my room. One half is for rest, the other half for work.
Before I decided on my wall colour and covering I assessed what furniture, soft furnishing and accessories I already had to see what colours would already be in the room and if there was a certain style that I could go with. This is when I realised I had quite an eclectic collection of things and I had acquired lots of stuff from my travels. Most of the big pieces of furniture, like wardrobes and my desk, are white but the other furniture I had was natural wood, including my headboard which I made from weathered wood, and my bedside tables which are old ladders. These don’t really match in style but the colours didn’t cause too much of a problem for deciding an overall theme for the room. It was the rugs, bedding, cushions and accessories that caused me to deliberate over a few different colours and patterns.
Most of the smaller things in my room are vibrant and mismatched so I could have either gone neutral with the colour palette to make them stand out and make the room slightly more relaxing. Or I could go bold and add a colour that would be fun and maybe even clash with what I already had. I spend a lot of time in my room and I therefore didn’t want it to be too relaxing and calm as I had to do work in here as well so I decided on the latter. I looked at some wallpapers and various colours but I thought that one colour on every wall would work best and as I have three large windows going dark with the paint would’t cause a lighting issue. The paint I decided on was Little Greene Marine Blue (https://www.littlegreene.com/paint/collection/blue/marine-blue) as it was dark but still bright with a lot of green and warmth. I am so happy with the colour I chose and is completely different to any colour I’ve had in my room before.
I did buy a few extra things for my room so I could make it feel even more boho and creative as I thought that kind of styling was the best option to go with if I didn’t want to get rid of all the things I already had and start again. I needed more storage and these woven baskets from Homesense were perfect. They add texture and warmth and give me a space to keep my bags and cushions in a way that adds to the decoration. I also wanted more yellow in the room so I painted one of my ladders yellow and bought a picture frame from Next that had space for multiple photos.
I am glad I went with pure white for the skirting boards, doors and curtains as it really brightens the room and makes the whole room feel cohesive as it is a constant feature and frames the colour. I would love to add more real plants in my room and I’m sure I will continue to collect more items from my travels to add into the room.
I will finish organising the other half of my room and show my work area and dressing room area that is predominantly Ikea furniture. I am also working on my artwork and print collection which should be almost complete soon.
